The One TV Show Every Aspiring Tech Entrepreneur Should be Watching

11 Apr

Let me describe a show to you without revealing which one it is, and you tell me if this is not every entrepreneur’s dream show. No peeking to the end to see which show it is!

The show follows a well respected entrepreneur around the United States as he visits three, sometimes four, startups every episode. The host, we’ll call him ‘Some Guy’ from here on, gets down and dirty with each of the startups, learning everything about their product — the process, the trade secrets, the creatives behind it — and he invariably tries and reviews every one.

Some Guy does a very good job of pulling the covers up on the pressure, fun and creativity that pervades these ventures. Viewers often get treated with an inside look at just how these startups operate. The entrepreneurs behind the startups get very candid with exactly how and why they got started, often sharing anecdotes and bits of advice to others that aspire to do the same thing. You, the viewer, begin to see why they put up with all they do — they have a real passion for their product and their users.

The challenges these startups face are likely very similar to ones that you have or will experience in your own business. They have insane deadlines, picky customers, and they always have a bottom line they have to meet financially. Most of them thrive on creativity. None of them are doing anything that hasn’t been done before in one way or another, they just add a little extra spice to the mix and it becomes apparent while watching the show that that is often all it takes to carve out a successful business.

None of these startups are trying to build-to-sell like so many tech startups are doing today. Their exit strategy doesn’t involve a Google or Microsoft. They’re in it for the long haul, and it’s refreshing to see the passion they have for their products.

So which show is it? The answer may surprise you. Here’s a clip from one of the episodes:

Yes, that’s right — the show is Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on the Food Network. ‘Some Guy’ is Guy Fieri and he travels all over the country checking out burger joints and dive bars that have a unique twist to their operation that makes their business successful.

If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur like myself, you need to watch this show.
